Jacó vs. Tamarindo: Which Costa Rica Beach Town Fits You?
Jacó vs. Tamarindo compared for expats, buyers, and travelers: access, prices, surf, nightlife, and rental demand — and how to choose between them.
The short version: choose Jacó if you want the shortest drive from San José, city-style conveniences, and the strongest year-round rental demand. Choose Tamarindo if you want the classic Guanacaste beach-town feel, drier weather, and a more international, surf-centered scene. Both are proven markets — the right one depends on how you'll actually use the property.
Getting there
- Jacó: about 1.5 hours by car from San José international airport (SJO) on a modern highway. Weekend traffic from the capital is real — that's also what fills rentals.
- Tamarindo: about 1 hour from Liberia airport (LIR), or 4+ hours from San José. Direct international flights into Liberia make it easy for North American visitors.
Climate and the beach
- Jacó sits on the Central Pacific: greener, more humid, with a consistent beach-break wave that suits beginners and intermediates. Playa Hermosa, ten minutes south, hosts world-class surf.
- Tamarindo is in Guanacaste, the driest province: more sun hours, browner landscape in dry season (December to April), and a wide, swimmable bay with reliable learner surf.
Cost and property market
- Jacó offers the wider price range: our current for-sale listings run from a $138,000 condo near the beach to $1.75M luxury villas in Playa Hermosa. Condo inventory is deep, which keeps entry prices accessible.
- Tamarindo trades at a premium for its beachfront core, and titled inventory near the water is tighter — much of the beachfront zone is concession land, so titled properties carry scarcity value.
Rental demand
- Jacó's demand is year-round: weekend traffic from San José, sport-fishing charters out of nearby Los Sueños Marina, and a steady international season. Long-term furnished rentals in our Jacó portfolio currently run about $900 to $1,750 per month.
- Tamarindo peaks hard in the December-to-April dry season with strong North American vacation demand, with a quieter green season.
Lifestyle
- Jacó: restaurants, supermarkets, private clinics, and nightlife within walking distance; the most complete infrastructure of any Central Pacific beach town.
- Tamarindo: international schools nearby, a big expat and digital-nomad community, and a more laid-back rhythm — but fewer big-town services.
Our take
If your goal is rental income and easy access from the capital, Jacó usually wins on the numbers. If your goal is the postcard Guanacaste lifestyle and you visit via Liberia, Tamarindo is hard to beat. Many of our clients tour both in one trip — the drive between them is about 3.5 hours.
